Piss Christ, Andres Serrano

A photograph of a crucifix in a small plastic submerged with urine of the artist. Then made a cibachrome print mounted on plexiglass.  It is a confrontational piece of art by criticizing the commercializing of religion and how Christian icons are depicted in the contemporary culture. His photograph is demonstrating artistic freedom and freedom of speech. I am related to this piece of art because I am a religious person, and I believe that this art has a reason for being exposed in this way. As we all Christians know we all commit sins and even though you try to avoid them you still keep on committing them. In other words, every time we commit a sin we are pissing Christ in the crucifix. That is why it is called the “Piss Christ”. Meanwhile we do not ask for forgiveness Christ is still their submerged in the urine waiting for us to ask for it. Colors are deeply saturated and each one with its own meaning. Red symbolizes the love that we have for Christ. Where gold and yellow symbolizes royalty and dignity, and brown, which there is few on the top, and the bottom symbolizes humility. In few words, it is about how Christians love Christ and recognize him as their King, and that he is their savior and every time they sin they are not only hurting themselves but Christ too.
